Though if you want some unadulterated Stereolab, this is one of my favorite songs of theirs.  It’s also a fantastic video.  It reminds me of the work of Kara Walker.

I’m not a fan of Madonna’s music by any stretch, but I’ve always liked this song.  I remember this video was released while I was living in London, and it caused quite a stir because of its references to Diana’s death (which had only happened about half a year or so earlier).

Dinner at the National Arts Club
It was a really lovely evening.  And the food was delicious.  I had salmon pate, a ribeye steak and a piece of a lemon cake called a Charlotte Royal something or other.  And we went through about three or five bottles of wine. This tradition really is fantastic.  And I’ll post photos once I get the film developed.

Lares and Penates
I know you may find this hard to believe, but there are words (or, I suppose, phrases in this case) that even I have never heard before.  From today’s Wordsmith comes this: Lares and Penates PRONUNCIATION: (LAR-eez and puh-NAY-teez) MEANING: noun: 1. Household gods: the benevolent gods in an ancient Roman household. 2. Household goods: a family’s treasured possessions. ETYMOLOGY: From...

Got an email a short while ago from John over at Thrillist.  They’ve fixed my settings, and I shouldn’t be receiving any more emails with the Atlanta edition in it. Very cool.  Much appreciated. Now, do you know anybody over at T-Mobile?

You Heard It Here First, Thursday Edition
caro: rach: You know what’s going to be rad? Martin Scorsese’s show for HBO, Boardwalk Empire. Well, he’s just producing it. But it’s about the seedy underbelly of Atlantic City in the prohibition era, and if anyone has been to AC now, they know that with even more saltwater taffy, less geriatrics, and some forbidden sauce, that place must have been the total sex during its time. The heavily...

This is hardly a big deal, but it is slightly annoying.  I will say off the bat that I like Thrillist and read it daily when it appears in my inbox.  But for some unknown reason, they signed me up for Thrillist Atlanta without asking me beforehand.  And I’ve unsubscribed from it.  And I’ve emailed them to ask them to stop sending it to me. Not only did nobody ever respond, but I still...

T-Mobile Can Suck It
Last week when my SIM card died, it took me a few minutes (OK, longer than that, if I’m going to be completely honest here) to figure out what had happened. I realized it by pulling the SIM card out of my phone and seeing that one side was basically scorched.  Not such a big deal, as the next day I simply wandered over to the T-Mobile store across the street from where I work and bought a...

Wall Street’s Socialist Jet-Setters
In Maureen Dowd’s latest column, she essentially winds up by calling for criminal prosecution of the Wall Street scumbags who caused the current financial crisis.  Before that, she simply goes to town describing their idiocy, greed and cluelessness, with a particular emphasis on John Thain, the former CEO of Merrill Lynch. In an interview with Maria Bartiromo on CNBC, Thain used the...

Don't Forget About Me by the American Breed
Does anybody have an MP3 copy of the song Don’t Forget About Me by ’60s jazz/rock band the American Breed?  It came on last night while I was listening to Soundelicious, and I was totally blown away. Unfortunately, neither Amazon nor iTunes has it and a web search turned up nothing.  I couldn’t even steal it for free on Acquisition (because it wasn’t there).  Amazon has a...

I would never, ever encourage such a thing.  It’s evil.  As somebody who works in the entertainment industry, I’m aware of how much effort goes into such endeavors and people who don’t cough up $12.50 to see chihuahas dancing or Jennifer Aniston costarring with dogs are just plain evil. Again, I say it: evil. So don’t do it.

Remember
by Christina Rossetti Remember me when I am gone away,   Gone far away into the silent land;   When you can no more hold me by the hand,   Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.   Remember me when no more day by day You tell me of our future that you plann’d:   Only remember me; you understand   It will be late to counsel then or pray.   Yet if you should forget me for a while.   And...
