***Spoiler alert***
The thing about last night’s Mad Men finale that was so great was that, in a season that unfolded very slowly, often with a logic and pacing to it that felt almost dreamlike, this episode was definitely propelled by actions and activity. The two most notable elements were the dissolution of the Draper marriage and the construction of the new agency.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind much if Betty is gone. The same goes for Kinsey and Cosgrove. I feel like those characters have played out their threads, and a good shaking up is exactly what the show needs for season 04. And which it seems certainly we’ll get.
I was happy to see Roger and Don back to being friends. The repartee and easiness between John Slattery and Jon Hamm is one of the best aspects of the show, in my opinion. And, minus Sal, the most engaging characters seem to be the ones who are going to be a part of the new agency.
I also enjoyed Lane Pryce telling St. John to basically shove it. Very good. Happy Christmas! was one of the best lines of the whole show. And Jared Harris has become one of my favorite elements of the series.
Interesting to note, too, that the season opened with the death of Don’s mother and closed with the death of his father. It fits in well with the theme of breaking with the past.
