I just turned off State of the Union with Jonathan King on CNN in semi-disgust after watching his interview with Mitch McConnell, in which the Republican minority leader spouted lie after lie about the health care bill. And not one thing was challenged by King.

Seriously, if you’re going to run a news program, at least question false statements like the American people are crying out for this health care bill to not be passed.

Last night was a historic moment in the long, slow process of bringing health care reform to the U.S. The Senate voted 60-39 to allow debate to begin on a final bill.

I was out to dinner with some friends and, at 9:00 p.m., I remembered that the vote had been scheduled for 8:00 p.m. I whipped out my BlackBerry, fired up Opera Mini and checked the New York Times to see what had happened.

I explained it to my friends, one of whom asked, so, they voted to allow a vote? To which I had to answer, well, basically, yeah.

How To Perfectly Poach an Egg in Less Than 5 Minutes

This method comes courtesy of my man Thomas Keller. I don’t have a link for it, because it was so easy that I memorized it out of one of his books that Kristin owns. Really easy:

Bring 2 - 4 cups of water to a medium boil (the amount of water doesn’t really matter, you just need enough to cover the egg(s) while it’s cooking).

Pour 2 - 3 tablespoons of white vinegar into the water.

Stir 3 times in the same direction, creating a mini-whirlpool (who says you can’t have fun!).

Quickly crack your egg into a small container (like a ramekin or measuring cup) and carefully tilt and lower the vessel with the egg into the water - dropping the egg in when part of the vessel is submerged (basically, gently get the egg into the swirling water).

Set a timer for 4 minutes. Remove the egg with a slotted spoon after 4 minutes (or when you feel like taking it out - I prefer my yoke runny, but hate white runny parts, so it’s preference). To make it look pretty, trim off the excess whites. Voila! Serve with bread, a salad, some lox, etc. Enjoy!

I was discussing the best way to poach eggs at brunch just this past Sunday. I’m going to give this method a try.

Zipcar should considering changing their slogan to wheels when we just sort of happen to have them. I’ve been trying to reserve a car for Thanksgiving for almost a week. No such luck. I was actually considering taking the bus to my family’s holiday dinner. Which wouldn’t be so bad, except that it would mean I’d be tied to NJ Transit’s holiday schedule. I think 90-year old men come more than buses on national holidays.

Finally, I found a free car this morning. It’s not in a convenient location, but at least it’s something. I’ll have to go down to Chinatown to pick it up. Which, again, not the end of the world. But it’s not really close to Greenpoint.

She wishes the media would just leave her alone! She’s a very private and media-sensitive person outside of Oprah, NBC News, FOX News, and the local media satellite press junket for her book launch! I can’t believe we live in a world where Newsweek would ignore her important message of fearmongering and instead decide to focus on such distasteful things! SHAME!

What I would like to know, and what I think is most important about this photo is, why isn’t she wearing socks? If you run without socks you’re going to get blisters.

Also, why is she holding two BlackBerries? Does she use two BlackBerries? Is one a backup BlackBerry? Maybe she takes the SIM card out of one BlackBerry when it breaks and puts it into the one that works. You know who sometimes uses a single SIM card in multiple phones. Terrorists. So, I just remembered my dream from last night. Or, rather, part of it. Normally, I think hearing about other people’s dreams is deadly boring, so I won’t blame you if you don’t read any more of this post. But it was just so random and so from my childhood that I had to jot it down.

You see, while I was growing up, my father lived in the house that his own parents had raised him in. And directly across the street was a large, well-kept home painted a bright pink. The color of bubble gum.

And my grandparents would often tell me, whenever we drove or walked by this house, that the man who had invented the cordless telephone lived there. Which I’m sure was true. I grew up not far from a large AT&T research facility that employed lots of different inventors and engineers. And my grandparents weren’t really ones to just make stuff up.

But throughout my childhood, I would repeatedly hear that the bright pink house was occupied by the man who invented the cordless telephone. Who, I should mention, I don’t think I ever even saw.

And, eventually, when I was in my early twenties, my father sold the house and moved somewhere else. So, I think I went through my entire childhood and young adulthood hearing about, but never seeing, the mythical man who invented the cordless telephone.

Anyway, last night, for some reason, and whatever the dream logic behind it that may’ve existed has long since vanished from my head, I was flying above the hills and steep streets of the town my father used to live in, and I and the person I was flying with flew over and past the bright pink house and just kind of kept going as we sped towards Millburn and Livingston.

And, in my dream, I thought, oh, hey. It’s the house that the man who invented the cordless telephone lives in.

I just got a call from a woman from the State of New York. Seems the people who used to do my taxes didn’t bother to respond to her several phone calls and letters regarding the filing fee for an old LLC of mine. Which they were supposed to have dissolved a few years ago. And never did.

So, in addition to the $2,500 filing fee, with penalties and interest I owe $4,000+.

Awesome.

Anyway, the woman was actually nice about it and mentioned that she’d called me as a last ditch effort to avoid having to put a lien on my bank accounts. Which was cool of her. We worked it out and everything is now settled.

But still. To not respond?

Nice.

I think I just learned a hard lesson about not doing business with your friends. It’s better to keep the two separate. Sure, you should be friendly with people you do business with and those relationships with can develop into friendships, but I don’t think it can work the other way around.
