Personally, I can’t wait for Sunday night’s season finale. Although the lineup of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Bored to Death and Mad Men makes for a strange viewing schedule. From the funniest show in the history of television to the most complicated and layered, with Jason Schwarzman in the middle.

Somebody recently told me that Breaking Bad is great too, but I’m a little reluctant to dive in. Terminal diseases and crystal meth just seems so bleak. Maybe I’ll give it a try, though. I saw the opening of one episode, and it was beautifully shot and very mesmerizing.

You Know What's Awesome?

How, even though it’s general knowledge that there’s an enormous parade for the Yankees today wherein up to 1 million people might be expected, the MTA apparently didn’t bother to increase the frequency of subway train service.

These are pretty cool. But if you don’t want to spend the money on this digital version, you can get the analogue model, which takes 35mm film, for about $15-$20 at the Lomography Store on 8th Street.

Fairytales for Grownups

Me: My niece and I were playing Connect Four this past Sunday and she was trying to cheat. I had to just tell myself that she's only a kid. So I threw the game in the garbage and locked her in the cellar alone with the lights out for a few hours.
Chris: My daughter has started lying to us already *sigh* humanity is simply flawed I suppose. I find that 15 minutes in the refrigerator calms any child down, good babysitting tip.
Me: Also bad was when my nephew wouldn't finish dinner. So I tied him to the TV antenna on the roof for a few hours during those really bad rainstorms we had a couple of weeks ago. Sure, he got pneumonia, but he sure did finish his string beans.
Chris: That's right. Do you see, kids? That's what life is all about, lessons. Lessons and learning.
Me: Personally, I think it was a mistake to pass all those child labor laws. Kids could learn a lot from, say, working in a coal mine for a few years while they're 7 or 8.
Chris: I find that a few nights sleeping outside with no clothes really hurries them along the next time you tell them to get dressed in the morning.
Me: We actually got my niece to concentrate on her schoolwork more by taking her toys, putting them in a big pile in the backyard, smashing them to pieces with a hammer and yelling, "Childhood is no time for fun. You must work!" She cried for a while, but she eventually got the message.

Being a Republican doesn't make you a homophobe.

ohhleary:

muppetpants:

Actually, Chris Christie supported the same civil unions bill the Democrats passed in 2006 and got blasted by the more conservative candidates in the primary for it. While he doesn’t support gay marriage either did Jon Corzine outside of rhetoric. It’s likely Christie will become more socially liberal after the election now that he’s done courting all the old Catholics. As far as the promotion of gay rights go, it’s absolutely zero change from the current state of affairs.

I completely disagree. If Chris Christie has any inkling of a desire to run for re-election without being challenged by a Club for Growth supporter who’s further to the right, he will drop the RINO persona and move to the right on social issues. With things like Hoffman, an anti-Snowe drumbeating, and the McCain of 2000 vs. 2008, a precedent has been set. This is the reality of the new Republican Party. There’s no big tent anymore. If you want to survive, adapt.

That’s very true about the Republican Party. But New Jersey is a very moderate state that tends to trend blue. He mostly won because people didn’t like Corzine. I would think that if he moves too far to the right, he could find himself having trouble getting reelected.

How depressing that this arrogant little man won. I guess the...

How depressing that this arrogant little man won. I guess the yuppification of New York is finally complete. I can hear the people who voted for him saying, sure, he may have utter contempt for me, but at least now I know how many calories my Dunkin’ Donuts Koolatta has.

I guess we get the politicians we deserve.

On the positive side, he spent $30 million on his reelection campaign and was the incumbent, and yet he won 51% to 46%. That’s hardly a resounding victory, especially when you consider that Thompson was basically a nonentity.

Nationally speaking, a lot of Republicans won tonight, but bear in mind that the victorious ones were the moderates. The ones who didn’t want Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck to campaign for them. And where the right-wing nutjobs did go, their candidate lost, giving Democrats a win in a district they haven’t held since the Civil War.

So if anybody tells you that this was a referendum on Obama, they don’t understand politics. Plain and simple.

Although if the Democrats do put off voting on healthcare reform until next year, as is now rumored, they deserve to lose big in 2010. And 2012.

OK, enough rambling for tonight. Time for bed.

ohhleary:

Send them to me so I can claim more hippie idealist scalps tomorrow. Your efforts are both futile and stupid. Plus, I fully believe you are getting exactly the mayor you deserve. Shitheads!

Vote for Thompson! Because we miss the old New York… the one run by organized labor, abandoned by the rich for the suburbs, leaving no money for city services.

Plus, who needs bike lanes or bus lanes when we could spend that money giving handouts to the unions?

Oh, wait, you’re going to vote for Reverend Billy? Aw, how cute. Good luck with that.

Not sure what you mean by old New York. The New York of Koch? Just saw an ad with him endorsing Bloomberg. The New York of Giuliani? No thanks.

I’m voting for Thompson, not because I think he’s going to win or even that he’d do such a great job, but because Bloomberg a) subverted term limits, which New Yorkers voted on twice to uphold; and because b) I just can’t bring myself to vote for somebody from the party of Palin, Bachman, Bush and Cheney. Bloomberg’s been a fine mayor, but he hasn’t been a spectacularly great mayor. The city was fine before him. It’ll be fine after he’s gone.

Anyway, Chris, you and I have disagreed on this before. Que sera. I’d say let the best candidate win, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

madmenfootnotes:

But for us now, that afternoon Dallas is more illustrative of something else: the swift and unscrupulous pace of history. Particularly, recent American history and how it is so phenomenally compressed. In just one generation, the psychic trauma of RFK and JFK has been largely erased. So maybe Don Draper’s aloof attitude is enlightened rather than repressive: “Everything’s going to be OK. We’ll have a new president. And everyone is going to be sad for a little bit.

***Note: spoilers ***

It’s amazing how much better the second half of this season has been than the first half. That said, the most curious thing about the entire season has been what a non-entity Don’s become. It’s almost like he’s about to cease to exist. In fact, I noticed that he didn’t even appear until eleven minutes into last night’s episode.

Don was forced to confess his past to Betty last week, and last night she responded by telling him she no longer loves him. His response to Kennedy’s assassination, in fact, was to not respond. He went to Roger’s daughter’s wedding. He went to the office the day of the funeral.

As much as Betty has become unlikeable this season, she was right to not be reassured by Don’s constant reiterations of everything’s going to be fine. Not only is he wrong, but he sounds like a fool for saying so.

The drama last night revolved around the characters of Roger and his family, and Pete Campbell. Don has been more or less marginal this season. I wonder if Matt Weiner is becoming bored with him.
